Statement of Intent

In St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we try to offer a breadth of experiences in PE. The children have opportunities to participate in activities such as games, dance, gymnastics and athletics. Every child is included in physical education and they are encouraged to be the best
that they can be. Children are provided with opportunities to showcase their skills and talents providing enjoyment and the chance to proud of their success.

In PE, children learn to work together and develop their teamwork, they work in a variety of group sizes, as a whole class and individually. Our children understand that PE is not a stand-alone lesson but that they can learn about Physical Education in the classroom indoors and in an outdoor environment. In St Joseph’s, we promote the values of determination, passion, respect, honestly, self-belief and teamwork giving the children knowledge, skills and motivation to establish and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle along with an enjoyment of physical activity and sport.

We are committed to ensure that every child has:

  • A sense of wellbeing resulting in healthy mind and a healthy, active life.
  • A stronger sense of self-esteem.
  • Equal opportunities to access all area of PE and engage in competitions or showcases of their skills.
  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

P.E. Curriculum Overview

P.E. Timetable Autumn 2

Swimming

Since 1994, swimming and water safety has been a statutory element of the National Curriculum for Physical Education in England. This means that every 11-year-old child should leave primary school with the skills to keep themselves safe while enjoying swimming with friends and family.

The three National Curriculum outcomes state that all schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage One or Key Stage Two and that child must:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

If your child is unable to complete any of the above, then they will be expected to take part in swimming lessons before they leave St Joseph’s at the end of Year 6. This is a national requirement for your child. A letter providing further information will be shared if your child will be attending swimming sessions.
