Prayer in St. Joseph’s

We place Christ at the centre of all we do and believe that Prayer helps us all to build our relationship with Jesus and come to  know him better. Therefore, we believe it is important for us to look to children as having an important role to play in leading the faith community. Jesus welcomed children and used them as models of faith for his followers and we try to do the same.

Mass – We attend Mass as a whole school at St. Joseph’s Church on Holy Days of Obligation.  In addition to this we celebrate special Masses during the school year, beginning with a  Welcome Mass as we start the new academic year. Every class attends Friday morning Mass  each term where the children lead the parish in the readings and Prayers of Intercession. Parents are invited to join us in church.

Celebration of the Word – We join together as a whole school and as key stages to help us understand the teachings of Jesus through the Gospels, and how we can live these out as  Christians and friends of Jesus. Our Class Chaplains help with the planning and delivery of these sessions. As a school community, we deepen our understanding of the seasons of the Church’s year by learning about liturgical colours, feast days and the Liturgy of the Word of Mass.

Classroom Prayers – We encourage children to reflect on their  learning in RE and respond to it. As part of this process, the children celebrate the learning that has taken place during their RE topics through a range of prayer experiences. We want children to develop both their understanding of prayer and their appreciation of it.

Prayer Groups – Throughout the year of the Church, children are invited to pray in school with both staff and parishioners. As well as Lenten  and Advent Prayers, in May and October we pray The Rosary. The Class Chaplains are encouraged to take an active part in this through the guidance of Mrs Tempestoso. 

Family Stay and Pray – Families are welcomed to Stay and Pray sessions throughout the year.
