Statement of Intent

The overarching aim for English at St. Joseph’s is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language. We endeavour to teach our pupils to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences and drawing on what they have read to develop their writing further. They should gain an understanding of grammar and punctuation and be able to manipulate these to meet the needs of their writing purpose. We aim to use discussion in order to learn; our children should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas as well as being competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
