St. Joseph’s school curriculum is built on the knowledge that the greatest impact on education is the quality of the pupils’ classroom experience. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that encourages pupils to become independent and aspirational learners. We hope to instil a love of learning that promotes enquiry and encourages pupils to apply themselves to the best of their ability.
Our school curriculum is underpinned by evidence, research and cognitive science and is designed to be challenging for all learners. We approach every aspect of school life with two goals in mind:
- To give pupils appropriate experiences to develop as confident, responsible citizens;
- To provide a coherent, structured curriculum that allows every child to reach their full potential.
St. Joseph’s curriculum is connected, cumulative and coherent. Individual lessons are underpinned by a robust teaching and learning model that provides opportunities for pupils to make connections to previously learned knowledge, practise new skills and apply this independently. Lessons are delivered in structured blocks which are linked across the curriculum wherever possible. These connections, allow pupils to apply their knowledge and understanding across subjects, terms and year groups, building a deeper level of understanding and embedding skills across the curriculum.
A vocabulary rich curriculum is planned for and delivered in all subject areas and this includes the study of morphology (word structure). Understanding word structure helps to improve spelling, expand vocabulary and break down learning barriers ensuring that our pupils gain confidence in both the spoken and written word.
